Choreographic Devices / Motif Development
Choreographic Devices and the use of Motif Developments are going to be efficient tools for building and layering my choreography, to inevitably make the action more interesting. I have selected a few devices to work on that will help structure my material and shape the movement to become more interesting and unique. One I will use throughout is embellishment, a technique to layer the choreography with additional movements. I feel this is important for transitions, as it helps the movement to flow in a much nicer way. I will embellish some of the sections with motifs from alternate sections, to keep linking my ideas of the piece throughout and to show the progression of how something may change as you experience the different stages. An example of this is the push motif (shown below) where in one section it is light and elegant, to show happiness and joy, whereas in a later section, it becomes more direct and punchy, to show anger and aggression.

(Push Motif Demonstration)
In the section which depicts coming out of depression and moving onto acceptance, I aim to incorporate accumulation within the ‘box’ motif. I want to use accumulation to represent one’s build-up of confidence and functioning, after releasing and not being able to control their emotions or body language within the depressive state. I aim to show that the mind working again and discovering that the solution to their problems is themselves; to recover from the grief, they need the ability to trust in themselves and find their confidence once again. The accumulation was a significant moment in this section, which I found took some time to generate material that worked for building up the courage and finding a solution out of their restrictive box. But, I found this to become easier when considering the shape of the box and exploring the scale of the movement, tracing the box shape to discover my boundaries and how I could push beyond this.
